The decentralized finance sector is once again grappling with the structural vulnerabilities inherent in its cross-chain interoperability infrastructure. On September 11, the multi-chain transfer platform Symbiosis was the target of a major breach specifically hitting its bridge reserved for Bitcoin. The attacker exploited a previously undisclosed security flaw within the BridgeV2 smart contract deployed on the BNB Chain, allowing them to mint massive amounts of representative tokens without providing the necessary collateral.

This large-scale technical manipulation resulted in the illusory creation of 46.1 billion syBTC, an absurd supply that exceeds the 21 million bitcoin hard cap by more than two thousand times. However, the arbitrary minting of crypto-assets does not automatically translate into real liquidity. Due to the limited depth of liquidity pools on decentralized exchanges like Uniswap v4, the hacker was only able to offload a negligible fraction of their synthetic loot. The actual financial damage stands at 4.39 WBTC, amounting to approximately 336,000 dollars.

Upon detection of the incident, the technical team acted swiftly, isolating and pausing the compromised bridge infrastructure while keeping transfer channels for networks such as Ethereum, TRON, and TON operational. An emergency safeguard measure successfully protected 15 BTC, worth nearly 1.15 million dollars, which are now secured in a multi-signature wallet managed by the team. To ensure service continuity for users, Bitcoin exchange flows have been temporarily rerouted to third-party gateways such as Chainflip and THORChain.

The ecosystem's focus has now shifted to managing the financial fallout and safely reopening the service. With the ultimatum issued to the attacker having expired, the 20% "white hat" bounty initially offered is now promised to anyone who provides decisive information leading to the recovery of the stolen funds. While a specific compensation plan is being prepared for affected liquidity providers, this event serves as a brutal reminder that securing cross-chain bridges remains one of the most significant challenges for the long-term viability of DeFi.
