With three million annual visitors, the city of Annecy aims to become a key hub for Bitcoin adoption in France. Spearheaded by the local association AlpineChain, the “Annecy Bitcoin Tour” initiative seeks to integrate digital asset payments into the daily operations of merchants in the “Venice of the Alps.” This project does not aim to replace fiat currencies, but rather offers a complementary solution designed to attract an international, tech-savvy, and mobile clientele accustomed to innovative practices in pioneering cities like Lugano or Cannes.

The foundation of this strategy rests on pragmatic execution and increased visibility. Currently, eight partner establishments, ranging from restaurants to concierge services and specialized shops, now display the “Bitcoin accepted here” sticker. This signage not only allows users to quickly identify crypto-friendly spots but also sends a strong signal about the business's positioning, perceived as forward-thinking and welcoming to a discerning global clientele.

The stakes for the region are multifaceted. Beyond the purely transactional aspect, AlpineChain makes it a priority to support merchants in managing these new payment flows while ensuring complete transparency regarding the current tax and regulatory framework. While French legislation imposes reporting requirements on capital gains above a certain threshold, the local approach favors concrete, simplified usage, transforming payment into a tool for regional differentiation in the tourism and outdoor leisure sectors.

Drawing inspiration from successful dynamics in other tourist hubs, Annecy is betting on organic growth. The goal is to structure a dense and reliable local network capable of meeting the needs of both foreign visitors and curious residents. By facilitating access to Bitcoin payments through technical and educational support, the project aims to put the alpine city on the European map of “Bitcoin-friendly” destinations, thereby asserting its modernity while strengthening its appeal to a rapidly growing community.
