A researcher from StarkWare recently finalized the first quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction on the mainnet, all without requiring any changes to the core protocol. By moving 3.1 BTC via a scheme dubbed "Quantum Safe Bitcoin," this demonstration proves that it is possible to anticipate future risks while maintaining the protocol's current integrity.

At the heart of this issue lies the theoretical vulnerability of the ECDSA algorithm used to generate the network's public and private keys. While today's computers are powerless against these complex mathematical calculations, the emergence of quantum computers equipped with Shor's algorithm could eventually allow private keys to be reconstructed from exposed public keys. It is estimated that nearly 6.9 million BTC could be at risk from such computing power, driving top-tier institutional players to heavily fund cybersecurity research.

The solution proposed by StarkWare moves away from traditional elliptic curves in favor of hash functions, whose internal structure remains robust against quantum computing capabilities. This method provides a security level estimated at 118 bits—a standard considered sufficient to counter the threats envisioned. However, this breakthrough faces an immediate economic reality: generating these transactions requires intense GPU processing power, resulting in costs estimated between $75 and $150 per transfer, which currently limits its use to a technical proof of concept.

This test is part of a broader discussion within the crypto community, where initiatives such as BIP 360 and 361 are exploring ways to gradually migrate addresses to resistant standards. Although the timeline for quantum computing remains uncertain, the stakes are high: the goal is to prepare for a seamless technological transition over several years to avoid any critical emergencies. By proving that the network can already incorporate quantum defense layers, developers are laying the necessary foundations for Bitcoin's longevity in the face of the most radical future computing developments.
