The decentralized finance protocol Aave has reached a new milestone in its expansion into institutional markets with the introduction of Custodied Collateral Lending. This strategic innovation aims to overcome the primary barrier to DeFi adoption by major financial institutions: the requirement to transfer assets on-chain. Until now, regulatory constraints and strict security policies prevented these players from moving their funds outside of traditional custodial structures. Thanks to this new mechanism, Aave now allows assets, such as Bitcoin, to be used as collateral without ever leaving the secure custody of a licensed custodian.
The mechanism is based on a tripartite collaboration between Aave, Anchorage, and Chainlink. Functionality is enabled by the CustodySync service, which ensures real-time synchronization between the Anchorage vault and the blockchain. This gateway generates a non-transferable token, dubbed CoCT (Custodied Collateral Token), which acts as a cryptographic mirror of the deposited collateral. Fully locked and lacking liquidity on the secondary market, this token enables the opening of credit positions within an isolated instance of Aave v4, ensuring the asset remains escrowed for the entire duration of the loan.
The stakes for Aave are immense: the protocol seeks to capture a portion of the massive volume of traditional assets currently excluded from decentralized ecosystems. By integrating this gateway, the platform generates new demand for stablecoins without disrupting its existing markets, all while offering institutions a leverage solution that meets their compliance requirements. The model is designed to be scalable, allowing for the gradual addition of new custodians without requiring a major technical overhaul of the infrastructure.
However, this framework introduces operational challenges that must still be addressed by the DAO's governance. Crucial parameters, such as collateralization ratios and liquidation premiums, have yet to be defined by specialized providers. A major departure concerns the management of defaults: unlike traditional DeFi, where liquidations are automated by algorithms, the process here relies on over-the-counter sales conducted directly by the custodian. This shift marks an evolution in the protocol's philosophy, as it gradually moves away from its trustless ideal to embrace a growing hybridization of centralized finance and decentralized infrastructure.
