Cryptocurrency exchange giant Coinbase has just reached a major milestone in the convergence of traditional finance and the decentralized ecosystem. By launching its first tokenized stocks on the Base network, the platform now provides access to shares in leading tech companies, such as Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet, without the time constraints of traditional stock markets. This innovation offers permanent liquidity, available 24/7, radically transforming how these global financial assets are accessed.

Technically, these digital assets are built on the B20 standard, an optimized version of the ERC-20 protocol specifically designed for the tokenization of real-world assets. Each token is strictly backed, at a 1:1 ratio, by a physical share held by the regulated custodian Alpaca, under the jurisdiction of the Abu Dhabi Global Market. This structure ensures that users hold a real claim on the underlying asset, while benefiting from the transparency provided by Chainlink’s data feeds to ensure real-time price accuracy.

The implications go beyond simple trading, as these tokens integrate instantly into Decentralized Finance (DeFi). From the moment they were launched, they became usable as collateral on Aave, the ecosystem's leading lending protocol. In practical terms, an investor can now leverage their tech company shares to obtain liquidity in the form of cryptocurrencies. While this interoperability offers new portfolio management strategies, it also raises questions regarding risk management, particularly concerning automated liquidation risks during periods of high volatility in traditional stock markets.

By entering this segment, Coinbase aims to secure a leading position in a real-world asset tokenization market estimated at over $1.3 trillion. By favoring its own infrastructure, the Base network, the company is targeting full vertical integration, from self-custody to transaction settlement. This push, while competing with other players like Robinhood, demonstrates a strategic ambition to become the essential bridge between real-world assets and the blockchain, while setting new standards for transparency and technical performance for the entire financial sector.
