The Ethena protocol has reached a major milestone in the evolution of its synthetic dollar, USDe, by integrating tokenized US stocks into its yield mechanism for the first time. Until now, the protocol's strategy relied exclusively on pure digital assets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, utilizing a basis trade technique. This mechanism involves holding a spot asset while simultaneously opening a short position on an equivalent perpetual contract, allowing the protocol to capture funding rates without exposure to directional market volatility.
In this new framework, Ethena leverages bStocks issued by BTech Holdings, which are tokenized securities backed by real shares held in custody. The Binance exchange has been selected as the primary partner for this operation. Concretely, the protocol uses these bStocks as spot collateral, while hedging is provided by equity perpetual contracts denominated in USDT. With a current circulating supply of approximately $4.9 billion, this diversification represents, according to the founder of Ethena Labs, the most strategic development since the protocol's launch.
The appeal of Binance lies in the depth of its traditional equity derivatives market, which boasts an open interest exceeding $2.9 billion. This new architecture allows Ethena to partially decouple its revenue streams. Indeed, while the yield generated by this strategy has averaged an annualized 3.56% over the last six months—a figure admittedly modest compared to the peaks seen during periods of high crypto speculation—it offers the crucial advantage of not being systematically tied to digital asset funding dynamics.
This shift comes against a backdrop of stabilization for USDe, the supply of which saw a significant contraction following the market turbulence at the end of 2025. By integrating assets from traditional finance, the protocol seeks to secure its economic model by reducing its exclusive reliance on crypto trader flows. While this diversification is not enough to cover the entirety of the current USDe supply, it marks a key step toward increased convergence between traditional financial markets and the decentralized ecosystem, thereby offering new resilience against the volatility cycles inherent to crypto-assets.
