Since 2023, authorities have recorded more than 135 kidnappings or attempts, a steadily rising statistic that has prompted the National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office (PNACO) to make this threat a top judicial priority.

The profile of victims is evolving, no longer limited exclusively to those with vast fortunes. While cases involving record sums of several million euros have dominated headlines, the Nice assault—targeting a haul estimated at $25,000—highlights a concerning expansion of targets. This democratization of violence now leaves more modest investors vulnerable, sometimes identified by organized criminal networks exploiting personal data leaks or the voluntary flaunting of their lifestyle on social media.
