The nature of the seized equipment provides crucial insights into the operators' strategy. Given that Bitcoin mining has become inaccessible to standard GPUs due to the power of specialized hardware (ASICs), it is highly probable that these facilities are focusing on Monero (XMR). This cryptocurrency is particularly favored by organized crime due to its advanced privacy protocols, which allow for the masking of addresses, amounts, and transaction histories, thereby facilitating large-scale money laundering.
Beyond the technical aspect, this seizure illustrates a worrying shift in the financing methods of Mexican cartels, such as the CJNG or the Sinaloa cartel. Mining offers the strategic advantage of obtaining "virgin" tokens, devoid of suspicious on-chain history, which simplifies their reintroduction into the legal financial system. According to cybersecurity experts, the use of these practices has surged by more than 55% in one year in Mexico, highlighting the increasing professionalization of criminal structures within the digital asset ecosystem.
