As AI models become increasingly autonomous and powerful, their ability to automate sophisticated cyberattacks presents an unprecedented threat to the integrity of the international financial system.

The primary danger identified lies in the speed and scale at which these tools can exploit security flaws. By automating the detection of vulnerabilities, AI significantly lowers the costs and time required for cybercriminals to carry out offensives. This issue is exacerbated by the high level of technological concentration in the sector, where a small number of cloud and software service providers form the bedrock of many banks and institutions. A failure at any one of these pivotal players could trigger a cross-border domino effect, making operational resilience increasingly difficult to maintain.

Beyond cybersecurity, the speculative fever surrounding the development of artificial intelligence is also alarming regulatory authorities. Massive investments in digital infrastructure and semiconductors have propelled certain stock valuations to record highs, often fueled by an excessive reliance on leverage. Against a macroeconomic backdrop already weakened by sovereign debt and geopolitical tensions, a sudden disenchantment with the economic promises of AI could trigger a sharp correction in equity and bond markets.

In response to these perils, the FSB is advocating for a proactive approach aimed at strengthening the supervision of advanced AI models throughout their entire lifecycle. Financial institutions are being strongly encouraged to increase stress testing to ensure their ability to maintain operations despite simultaneous attacks on multiple fronts. The challenge now lies in finding a delicate balance between technological innovation and the need to protect market stability against a technological acceleration whose side effects could prove devastating.
