The research lab Ethlabs, founded by former Ethereum Foundation executives, has recently introduced EIP-8198, a technical proposal aimed at increasing network responsiveness. The core ambition is to reduce the block production time, currently set at 12 seconds, to an initial target of 10 seconds. Unlike more radical attempts in the past, this approach favors a measured progression to avoid compromising decentralization, a fundamental pillar of the blockchain. The designers justify this caution by the need to better manage proving times, while leaving the door open for future optimizations.

This initiative has garnered strong support within the DeFi ecosystem. Major players such as Ondo Finance, Lido Finance, and Ethena have expressed their enthusiasm, noting that improving network velocity strengthens Ethereum's overall competitiveness. Although staking infrastructures and decentralized finance protocols do not depend exclusively on this acceleration to function, developers agree that faster infrastructure fosters a better user experience and increased transaction fluidity.

This project comes at a favorable economic time for users, with transaction fees on the main network reaching historically low levels. While a simple transfer was significantly more expensive in the spring of 2026, it now hovers around $0.095. This cost deflation is the result of moderate demand on the "mainnet" coupled with the rise of Layer-2 solutions, which are absorbing an increasing share of traffic while optimizing data processing.

Strategically, EIP-8198 raises questions about the positioning of Layer-2s relative to the main network. Although these solutions remain much faster than the "mainnet"—with confirmations counted in milliseconds for some—reducing Ethereum's block time could eventually redefine the value proposition of these secondary layers. If scalability becomes less dependent on L2s, the latter will likely have to justify their utility through other levers, such as specific features or increased security, while maintaining a technological edge over competitors like Solana, whose block speed remains significantly higher, albeit at the cost of lower decentralization.
