The blockchain ecosystem is facing a major technical rift. Following months of alignment attempts, Ethereum core developers and Base teams have officially acknowledged the failure to converge on a single transaction standard for future programmable wallets. Going forward, the Ethereum mainnet is favoring EIP-8141, while Coinbase's rollup will deploy EIP-8130, with each project following its own timeline and architectural specifications.

At the heart of this rift lies the issue of native account abstraction. Unlike traditional accounts (EOAs) restricted to basic functions, these new protocols aim to turn wallets into smart contracts capable of managing passkeys, paying fees in third-party tokens, or executing complex multi-step transactions without relying on costly third-party infrastructure. The technical disagreement centers specifically on the validation architecture for these transactions—a critical point that Base, leveraging full control over its sequencer, has opted to steer toward a solution optimized for its own requirements.

For developers and wallet providers, this divergence creates an increased workload and greater complexity in maintaining codebases. Interfaces, auditing tools, and indexing services will now have to support two distinct paths for the same user. Even more concerning is the genuine risk of divergent account addresses emerging depending on the network used, undermining the promise of a unified, seamless digital identity across the crypto ecosystem.

Despite these obstacles, the industry has safeguards to mitigate the impact on the end-user experience. The ERC-5792 standard (Wallet Call API) provides an abstraction layer allowing decentralized applications to remain agnostic to internal transaction mechanics. In practice, the burden of this technical fragmentation will rest primarily on wallet developers, who will need to absorb these differences to ensure baseline interoperability, even as the debate over Layer 2 standardization remains a central challenge for the Ethereum Foundation.
