The GnosisDAO community recently reached a historic milestone by voting overwhelmingly in favor of transforming Gnosis Chain. After operating as a standalone layer 1 blockchain, the network is set to evolve into a rollup integrated into the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ). With 123,158 GNO tokens cast in favor of the GIP-153 proposal against just 115 opposing votes, the quorum was easily cleared, validating a profound shift in the protocol's technical architecture by 2026 or 2027.

The paradigm shift is significant: Gnosis Chain will abandon its own consensus mechanism and independent validators to rely directly on the security of the Ethereum network. In practical terms, the network will transition from a sovereign chain to a layer 2, while guaranteeing operational continuity for its users. Assets, balances, and the xDAI gas token will remain unchanged, ensuring a seamless transition for applications deployed across the ecosystem.

The core objective of this move is to address the current fragmentation of layer 2 solutions. Today, the sheer number of rollups creates isolated silos, forcing users to rely on bridges to transfer funds—interfaces that are often vulnerable and responsible for major security breaches. By adopting the EEZ framework, Gnosis Chain aims to become the first network capable of executing synchronous transactions with other rollups, thereby eliminating dependence on traditional interoperability protocols.

This decision aligns with a broader debate led by Ethereum's key figures, including Vitalik Buterin, who recently criticized the limitations of the current centralized rollup model. By pooling security through the EEZ framework, Gnosis Chain is choosing to sacrifice some of its autonomy in exchange for enhanced interoperability. This bold strategy positions the network as a pioneer, at a time when tens of billions of dollars are currently locked in siloed scaling solutions.

While this transition promises unified liquidity and bolstered robustness, it also presents a significant technical challenge. Gnosis Chain will need to prove the viability of the EEZ framework in real-world conditions, a technology that remains largely experimental. The 2027 target gives developers the necessary time to refine this architecture, while the rest of the market watches with interest as this unprecedented attempt to reconcile network sovereignty with deep integration into the Ethereum sphere unfolds.
