This position is a core tenet of his "defensive accelerationism" (d/acc) doctrine, which advocates for massive investment in technological tools capable of protecting critical infrastructure and decentralized ecosystems.

The central argument rests on the prohibitive cost of human auditing, which has historically been the weak link for defenders. Unlike cybercriminals, who only need one exploit to succeed, developers must secure every inch of often highly complex code. Recent experiments, notably the DARPA competition, demonstrate that automated systems are now capable of identifying and patching vulnerabilities without human intervention. With 77% of injected flaws detected during this competition, along with the discovery of previously unknown vulnerabilities in open-source software, the case for technically viable defensive automation has been made.

Despite these advancements in coding, the crypto ecosystem faces persistent challenges, as evidenced by the staggering $1.46 billion loss suffered by the Bybit platform. These incidents serve as a reminder that the majority of thefts do not stem from programming errors, but rather from private key compromise or social engineering targeting users. The challenge for future security does not lie solely in the robustness of protocols, but in the ability of AI tools to detect anomalies in real-time and prevent fraudulent transactions before they are validated.

In response to these risks, the Ethereum Foundation has ramped up its efforts through programs like "Trillion Dollar Security" and the "Lean Ethereum" initiative. By focusing on automated formal verification and providing open-source security software, the goal is to drastically lower the barrier to entry for defenders. By investing a significant portion of his own wealth in cryptocurrencies, Buterin is doubling down on his bet: the resilience of decentralized networks will depend on our ability to industrialize protection through AI as rapidly as attackers exploit its offensive capabilities.
