While the sector was busy watching for the arrival of the "general public," machines began colonizing blockchain networks on their own. Between May 2025 and April 2026, these software entities generated approximately 176 million on-chain transactions, primarily denominated in USDC. This phenomenon marks a paradigm shift where on-chain activity is no longer tied to human browsing, but to automated processes.
This economy runs on high-frequency, low-value exchanges, typically involving API calls, data requests, or computing power. With an average transaction value of around thirty cents, these operations are ill-suited for traditional financial systems, whose fixed fees would make such activities unprofitable. The Base network, backed by Coinbase, has established itself as the epicenter of this activity, allowing over 480,000 agents to operate via dedicated protocols that bypass the friction of traditional banking forms and interfaces.
The financial stakes of this "agentic commerce" are immense. Gartner predicts that by 2028, 90% of business-to-business transactions could be orchestrated by AI agents, representing a staggering volume of $15 trillion. Although current monthly transaction volume—around $24 million—remains modest compared to card payment giants, the momentum is structural. The goal is no longer to replace the banking system for everyday consumer purchases, but to provide a payment infrastructure capable of supporting automation that 20th-century legacy rails simply cannot handle.
Despite the excitement, technical and operational challenges remain, particularly regarding the security of these autonomous wallets. Market players are currently developing safeguards, such as spending caps and allowlists, to govern this software autonomy. While this transition toward an "agentic economy" promises to exponentially increase transaction volume on blockchains, it also redefines success metrics: the focus is shifting toward the ability of networks to support machines billing by the millisecond, rather than growth in the number of human users.
