With the layoff of 54 employees, representing approximately 20% of its workforce, the organization is looking to optimize its resources amid a challenging financial climate, as the price of ether currently trades well below its 2025 all-time highs. This austerity measure precedes the launch of « Lean Ethereum », a radical technical overhaul initiative introduced by Vitalik Buterin, aimed at streamlining an architecture that has become overly complex over the past decade.

The « Lean Ethereum » project is rooted in a drive for extreme simplification. While the current network has accumulated nearly 300,000 lines of code, the goal is to rebuild consensus layers using minimalist cryptographic foundations, particularly the hash function. This redesign targets concrete improvements for users: transactions validated in seconds, a significant reduction in fees on Layer 2 networks, and, above all, the democratization of validation with an entry barrier lowered to one ether, compared to 32 today.

Beyond optimization, the primary driver behind this transformation is the quantum threat. Recent research, involving influential members of the Foundation, demonstrates that the network's security could be compromised sooner than expected. While the current capabilities of quantum computers do not yet allow for such an attack, the threshold required to render 17% of ETH tokens vulnerable has been drastically revised downward. The Foundation has therefore set a tight three-to-four-year timeline to migrate its systems, a race against the clock in the face of constantly evolving technology.

This ambitious project nonetheless raises questions about the organization's internal stability.
