The European financial landscape has reached a pivotal milestone in its digital transition with the launch of projet Pythagore, a large-scale initiative led by Euroclear and the Banque de France. This ambitious experiment brings together a consortium of 33 major players, including leading banking institutions such as BNP Paribas, JPMorgan, and Crédit Agricole, as well as industrial giants like EDF and TotalEnergies. The core objective is to fundamentally transform the management of financial securities by migrating their lifecycles—from initial issuance to final redemption—onto blockchain-based infrastructure.

The primary focus is on the NEU CP market (short-term negotiable debt securities), a critical segment for corporate and public sector treasury financing, representing approximately €300 billion in outstanding amounts. Currently, these operations are hampered by fragmented processes, batch settlements, and the constant need for accounting reconciliations between various stakeholders. By replacing these legacy mechanisms with a DLT (distributed ledger technology) architecture, the project aims to streamline trading and enhance securities liquidity.

Technically, Pythagore relies on strategic interoperability: Euroclear’s tokenization platform, D-FMI, is connected to the Banque de France’s blockchain ledger. This system, built on the Besu open-source software, ensures compatibility with the Ethereum ecosystem while maintaining a secure environment. To facilitate final settlement, the experiment also integrates the European Central Bank’s Pontes infrastructure, enabling the direct use of central bank money—the ultimate guarantee of security for financial transactions.

The stakes of this initiative go beyond mere technical modernization; it aims to prevent the systemic fragmentation of the European financial market in the face of proliferating isolated ledgers. In addition to using central bank money, the project incorporates innovative solutions for foreign currency-denominated assets, notably through SG-FORGE's stablecoin. By mobilizing stakeholders of this caliber, monetary and financial authorities are sending a clear signal: tokenization is no longer a forward-looking concept, but is becoming the cornerstone of Europe’s future financial infrastructure.
