The digital asset sector reaches a major milestone as neobank Revolut introduces its own stablecoin pegged to the single currency, named EURR. This new asset, classified as an Electronic Money Token (EMT) under the European MiCA regulatory framework, is legally issued by Bridge Building S.A., a licensed Luxembourg-based entity belonging to the Bridge platform (acquired by Stripe for $1.1 billion). Initially rolled out to approximately two million customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal, this project aims to bridge the traditional banking system with the blockchain ecosystem.

Operationally, the asset ensures a strict peg to the European currency at a rate of 1 EURR to 1 euro. The token's value is backed by liquid reserves held in segregated accounts, audited monthly by independent firms. Initially deployed on the Ethereum network, the token is designed to become multi-chain and expand to eight other networks, including Polygon, Solana, and Arbitrum. Conversion from fiat accounts is processed without direct fees, allowing for the transfer of value to self-custody wallets or decentralized applications, although these tokens do not benefit from legal bank deposit guarantee schemes.

The arrival of this newcomer takes place in a landscape where euro-pegged stablecoins remain marginalized. While the global market capitalization of stablecoins exceeds $300 billion, euro-backed currencies represent less than $800 million, with the market being largely dominated by the dollar. The strict enforcement of MiCA rules is leading to the progressive withdrawal of non-compliant tokens such as USDT within the European Economic Area. The creation of EURR provides a regulated solution for users wishing to operate on the blockchain without exposure to euro-dollar exchange rate risk.

The token's primary advantage lies in the company's commercial reach, boasting more than 80 million customers worldwide, including 16 million users of its crypto services. By integrating the asset directly into its application, the fintech could significantly accelerate the injection of euro liquidity into decentralized finance. While the issuer retains the yields generated from the reserves, this initial initiative paves the way for the future launch of other stablecoins pegged to various national currencies.
