The Ethereum Foundation has just unveiled the technical roadmap for Hegotá, the update that will follow the Glamsterdam deployment. After analyzing 62 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), developers have established a strict hierarchy, retaining only two major upgrades as "S" priority. This rigorous selection process aims to maintain a steady development pace, with the ambition of delivering a significant update every seven to nine months to address both the immediate and future technological challenges of the network.
The core of this update relies on two strategic pillars aimed at strengthening the protocol's resilience. First, the introduction of FOCIL (EIP-7805) aims to effectively counter transaction censorship by mandating inclusion lists validated by a committee, thereby reducing the control block builders exert over transaction content. Second, Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) introduce native account abstraction. This innovation will enable greater flexibility, such as paying fees in stablecoins, batching complex operations, or simplifying signature management, thereby enhancing the user experience while providing a software foundation that is more adaptable to future developments.
Beyond immediate structural adjustments, the network is placing quantum security at the top of its long-term priorities. The Foundation has set a deadline of December 2029 to immunize its consensus, execution, and data layers against potential quantum computing capabilities. Although such a threat is not yet concrete, this preventive approach is deemed essential to ensure the long-term integrity of private keys and digital signatures. Hegotá will not complete this transition alone, but it lays the necessary groundwork to gradually integrate new cryptographic standards.
This trajectory is part of a broader plan structured around five pillars, which also includes optimizing data processing and accelerating transaction finality. While the schedule is ambitious, it remains subject to a technical review planned for early 2027. By focusing on clear technological priorities now, the Ethereum Foundation seeks to avoid structural delays and ensure the robust longevity of its blockchain in the face of future technological shifts.
